About Unleashed Writing
Unleashed Writing is a timed writing process that is really the only method I use to get my heart on the page. I learned this method from years of Wild Writing with the incomparable Laurie Wagner.
Unleashed Writing works like this: For 15 minutes, we write by hand as fast as we can from a poetry prompt. It’s a different poem for every write. We pick a few lines from each poem and just riff off of them on the page. We only write by hand on paper. Writing by hand slows us down. For these two hours, we step away from our fast-paced lives and back into a slow, more sustainable rhythm.
Our motto is: “Just keep the pen moving.” By writing quickly, we are much more likely to push past our inner critic and the many ways we censor ourselves. We are digging to reach a space in which we are safe enough, loose enough, and brave enough to discover and articulate what we’re really trying to say, feel, communicate, or conjure.
After we write, we read our work aloud. We don’t critique. We simply witness, honor, and thank each other for sharing. The space is safe, utterly confidential, and truly fertile. Picture a tribe around a fire. It’s a lot like that. Sacred.
We write three times within the session. Usually the third write is only a 5-8 minute write–whatever the remaining time allows.
This technique is for you if you want to bring ease back into your writing practice, start a writing practice for the first time, or simply want a communal writing space.
You don’t have to be a writer to take the class…merely someone who wants to let loose, take creative risks, push past well-worn territory, and move into something new. I hope you’ll join us!
